Karakalpaks
A Kipchak people of the Amu Darya delta on the shores of the Aral Sea. Their name means "black hat", and they have their own republic within Uzbekistan.
The Karakalpaks are a Turkic people of the Kipchak branch living in north-western Uzbekistan, in the delta where the Amu Darya flows into the Aral Sea. Their language is very close to Kazakh, and their name means "black hat".
The Republic of Karakalpakstan is part of Uzbekistan, with its capital at Nukus. The Savitsky Museum in Nukus holds one of the world's most important collections of Russian avant-garde art. The epic "Forty Maidens" is the best-known work of Karakalpak folklore.
