"Adai" (kuy)

Kurmangazy's best-known kuy, evoking the energy of horses galloping across the steppe, now in the repertoire of orchestras.

"Adai" is named after the Adai tribe of western Kazakhstan. With its fast rhythm and repeatedly swelling melody it evokes a galloping herd, the steppe wind and a feeling of freedom.

It is a cornerstone of the dombra repertoire and has been arranged for folk and symphony orchestras; many ceremonies and concerts in Kazakhstan open with it.

Its composer, Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly (19th century), is regarded as the greatest composer of Kazakh instrumental music.
