Aliya Moldagulova and Manshuk Mametova

Two young Kazakh heroines killed in the Second World War, both Heroes of the Soviet Union.

Manshuk Mametova (1922–1943) was a machine-gunner. Badly wounded near Nevel in October 1943, she beat back an enemy attack with her machine gun before dying; she was the first Kazakh woman to be named a Hero of the Soviet Union.

Aliya Moldagulova (1925–1944) was a sniper who put dozens of enemy soldiers out of action in a short time at the front. She was killed in January 1944 in the Pskov region while leading soldiers into an attack.

Both were made Heroes of the Soviet Union posthumously. Streets and schools across Kazakhstan bear their names, and monuments to them stand in Almaty.
