The foundation stone was laid in March 2019 and the mosque was officially opened on 12 August 2022. It was funded by private investors rather than the state budget.

The main dome is about 83 metres high and 62 metres across, and each of the four minarets rises to 130 metres. It is the largest mosque in Central Asia and one of the largest outside the Middle East.

The capital's earlier Hazrat Sultan Mosque (2012) is decorated with Kazakh ornament. Both mosques are places of worship and city landmarks.
