Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in Transdanubia and the largest lake in Central Europe, fed mainly by the Zala river.

Its hilly north shore is known for historic villages and vineyards, while the flat south shore has family resort towns with shallow, warm water.

Balatonfüred and Hévíz grew as resorts in the 19th century; today hundreds of thousands holiday here each summer, with sailing, cycling and wine festivals.
