My Name Is Red
Orhan Pamuk's 1998 novel: a murder story among miniature painters in late-16th-century Istanbul.
The novel is set in Istanbul in the winter of 1591. The sultan secretly commissions a book illustrated in the Venetian manner, with perspective and portraiture; one of the miniaturists is murdered, and the killer is sought among them.
Each chapter has a different narrator — the painters, the murderer, the corpse, even a tree, a horse and the colour red itself. In this way Pamuk dramatises the clash between Eastern miniature and Western painting, tradition and individuality.
Translated into more than 60 languages, it won the International Dublin Literary Award in 2003 and helped secure Pamuk's world reputation.
