Bozzhyra lies in Mangystau Region in western Kazakhstan. Millions of years ago the Tethys Ocean covered the area; after it retreated, layers of chalk and limestone were carved by wind and rain into huge towers, "fangs" and stepped slopes.

The valley's most famous view is a pair of sharp peaks known as the Fangs of Bozzhyra, and fossils of sea creatures can be found in the rocks.

A remote place reachable only by off-road vehicle, Bozzhyra has become a favourite of travellers and photographers in recent years.
