Jalil Mammadguluzadeh

Writer and journalist (1866–1932), founder of the famous satirical magazine Molla Nasraddin.

Jalil Mammadguluzadeh was born in Nakhchivan in 1866, graduated from the Gori Teachers' Seminary and worked for many years as a village teacher.

On 7 April 1906 he published the first issue of Molla Nasraddin in Tiflis. With cartoons and satire it attacked ignorance, superstition and injustice and was read throughout the Muslim East.

Mirza Jalil also wrote the stories The Mailbox and The Events in the Village of Danabash and the comedy The Dead. He died in Baku in 1932.
