The Selimiye Mosque was built in Edirne, the former Ottoman capital, on the orders of Sultan Selim II. Mimar Sinan completed it when he was past eighty and regarded it as the summit of his art.

Its dome, about 31 metres across, rests on eight piers, so the whole interior can be taken in at a glance. Each of the four slender minarets is about 71 metres tall. The complex includes madrasas, a school of hadith and a covered market.

"Selimiye Mosque and its Social Complex" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.
