Football reached Türkiye in the early 20th century, when Beşiktaş (1903), Galatasaray (1905) and Fenerbahçe (1907) were founded. The Süper Lig, played since 1959, is among Europe's most-watched leagues, and Trabzonspor was the first club outside the "big three" to win it.

The national team finished third at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008.

In 2000 Galatasaray won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, becoming the first Turkish club to lift a European trophy. Turkish fans' passionate atmosphere is famous in stadiums.
