Gyjak

A bowed string instrument with a spherical body, a close relative of the Azerbaijani kamancha.

The gyjak's spherical body is made from a gourd, a large nutshell or wood and covered with skin; the number of strings varies, most often three.

Held upright and played with a bow shaped like an archer's bow, it is found in Turkmen, Uzbek, Tajik and Uyghur music and is a close relative of the Azerbaijani and Persian kamancha.

Turkmen bagshy sing epics and songs to the gyjak together with the dutar, and its weeping tone stands out in sad melodies.
