Gyula Németh was one of the greatest Hungarian Turkologists of the 20th century, heading the chair of Turkish philology at the University of Budapest and training many Turkologists.

He wrote on the Old Turkic inscriptions, the history of the Turkic languages, Turkic loanwords in Hungarian and the formation of the Hungarian people, and studied the Cuman language and Turkic written records in Hungary.

Highly respected in Türkiye, where he was an honorary member of the Turkish Language Association, his works remain core sources of Turkology.
