The Old City (Icherisheher) is the oldest part of Baku. Mosques, caravanserais, bathhouses and homes survive in the narrow lanes within its stone walls, and people still live here today.

The Maiden Tower is the symbol of the city — a 29-metre cylindrical tower facing the Caspian. Scholars disagree on when and why it was built, and it has inspired many legends. The Palace of the Shirvanshahs is a 15th-century complex built after the Shirvanshah state moved its capital to Baku.

The "Walled City of Baku with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.
