Imadaddin Nasimi was born in Shamakhi in the second half of the 14th century. He wrote in Azerbaijani, Persian and Arabic, and his Azerbaijani ghazals are among the early summits of poetry in the language.

A follower of Hurufism, he saw the human being as the mirror of divine beauty — "Both worlds fit in me, but I do not fit in this world". For these ideas he was cruelly executed in Aleppo in 1417.

The 650th anniversary of his birth was included in UNESCO's calendar of anniversaries in 2019, which Azerbaijan declared the Year of Nasimi.
