Memed, My Hawk (İnce Memed)
Yaşar Kemal's four-volume novel (1955–1987): the epic of a young man from Çukurova who takes to the mountains against the landlords.
The hero, Memed, grows up in the village of Değirmenoluk at the foot of the Taurus under the tyranny of the landlord Abdi Ağa. After eloping with his beloved Hatçe he clashes with the landlord's men and takes to the mountains as a brigand.
Memed becomes a protector of poor villagers, a folk hero. Yaşar Kemal tells the story with sweeping descriptions of the Çukurova landscape, the rhythm of folk epics and vivid spoken language.
The first volume appeared in 1955 and the last in 1987. The novel has been translated into more than 40 languages, is known in English as Memed, My Hawk and was filmed in 1984.
