The Yunus Emre Institute was established under the Yunus Emre Foundation by a 2007 law and opened its first centres in 2009. It is named after Yunus Emre, the great poet of the Turkish language.

It runs Turkish courses abroad, administers a Turkish proficiency exam, supports Turkology departments at universities and organises concerts, exhibitions and film days. Its centres operate in dozens of countries, from Baku to Budapest and from Astana to London.

It also carries out joint projects with Turkic countries, including teacher training, promotion of shared cultural heritage and student exchanges.
