Istanbul Airport was built at Arnavutköy on the European side of the city, near the Black Sea coast. It opened on 29 October 2018, and on 6 April 2019 all passenger flights moved there from the old Atatürk Airport.

It handles tens of millions of passengers a year and is one of Europe's busiest airports. Its location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa has made it one of the world's main transfer hubs.

When fully completed, the airport is planned to serve 200 million passengers a year.
