Jangi

A heroic tune and dance that once called warriors to battle and keeps their spirit alive.

Jangi takes its name from jang, "battle". In old times the tune was played on zurna and naghara to rouse warriors before a fight.

The dance consists of strong, rhythmic steps and arm movements as if holding a sword or dagger; dancers sometimes stage mock duels with imitation weapons.

Today jangi is heard at holidays, at the opening of sports events and in dance ensembles' programmes.
