The music of "Meniñ Qazaqstanım" ("My Kazakhstan") was written by Shamshi Kaldayakov and the words by the poet Zhumeken Nazhimedenov in 1956. The song quickly became much loved and was on young people's lips during the Jeltoqsan events of 1986.

In 2006, with its text partly revised, it was adopted as the national anthem of Kazakhstan.

The anthem praises the country's steppes, the people's history and independence and is played at official ceremonies and sporting events.
