Uranium in Kazakhstan

Since 2009 Kazakhstan has been the world's largest uranium producer, with about 40% of global output.

Kazakhstan has some of the world's largest uranium reserves. Most deposits lie in the south of the country, in the Turkistan and Kyzylorda regions and the Chu–Sarysu basin.

Uranium is mainly extracted by in-situ recovery: a solution is pumped into the ore through wells and the uranium is brought to the surface dissolved in it. The method is cheaper and disturbs less land.

The national company Kazatomprom is the world's largest producer of natural uranium, and Kazakh uranium fuels nuclear power plants in China, Europe, the United States and elsewhere.
