Bygone Days (Abdulla Qodiriy)

The first Uzbek novel (1922–1926), a tragic love story set in the 19th-century Kokand Khanate.

First serialised in the magazine Inqilob in 1922 and published as a book in 1926, it is regarded as the first novel in Uzbek literature.

Set in the mid-19th century amid the power struggles of the Kokand Khanate, it tells how the love of Otabek, a young Tashkent merchant, and Kumush of Margilan ends in tragedy through intrigue, slander and old customs.

Qodiriy vividly portrays the life, speech and customs of the people. The novel was filmed by Uzbekfilm in 1969 and remains one of the most widely read Uzbek novels.
