The church in the village of Kish belongs to the Christian heritage of Caucasian Albania; by tradition the first church on the site was built in the early centuries AD. Christianity became the state religion of Albania, on the territory of today's Azerbaijan, in the 4th century.

In 2000–2003 a joint Azerbaijani–Norwegian project restored the church and turned it into a museum. It is a symbol of Azerbaijan's multi-faith past and religious tolerance.
