Proclamation of the TRNC (15 November 1983)
On 15 November 1983 the Turkish Cypriots proclaimed the independent Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north of the island.
After 1974 the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus was first set up in the north (1975); on 15 November 1983 its assembly adopted a declaration of independence proclaiming the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Türkiye recognised it at once, while UN Security Council Resolution 541 deemed the declaration legally invalid and called on members not to recognise it — the reason sporting and economic restrictions on Northern Cyprus persist.
Since 2022 Northern Cyprus has been an observer of the Organization of Turkic States, and 15 November is celebrated as Republic Day.
