Northern Cyprus Security Forces
The force descended from the Turkish Resistance Organisation (TMT) of 1958, called the Security Forces Command since 1976.
The Turkish Resistance Organisation (TMT) was formed in 1958 to protect Turkish Cypriots against the Greek Cypriot EOKA; it was renamed Mücahit in 1967 and the Security Forces Command in 1976.
Today the Security Forces are the defence force of Northern Cyprus, and units of the Turkish Armed Forces are also stationed on the island.
1 August, the anniversary of the TMT's founding, is celebrated in Northern Cyprus as Social Resistance Day.
