Two friends, Saribai and Karabai, betroth their children before they are born. Saribai dies, Karabai breaks his word and wants to give his daughter Bayan to another; Kozy Korpesh seeks her out but is killed through his rival's treachery.

Bayan takes her own life at her beloved's grave. The epic is widespread among Turkic peoples, with Bashkir, Altai and Tatar versions.

An ancient mausoleum attributed to the lovers stands near Ayagoz in Abai Region. Abai and Mukhtar Auezov valued the epic highly, and operas and films have been made on its theme.
