Lahij lies on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, in the valley of the Girdiman river. With its streets paved with river stones, its old water and drainage system and its stone houses, the settlement feels like an open-air museum.

For centuries Lahij was a town of coppersmiths. Hand-hammered, engraved copper jugs, trays and cauldrons made here were carried all over the Caucasus, and the craft passes from master to apprentice and father to son.

"Craftsmanship of copper in Lahij" was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015. The settlement is also known for carpet-weaving and blacksmithing.
