Goygol lies south of Ganja in the Lesser Caucasus, about 1,500 metres above sea level. During a powerful earthquake in 1139 part of Mount Kapaz collapsed and blocked the Aghsu river, creating several lakes. Goygol — the "Blue Lake" — is the largest and loveliest of them.

Its water is so clear and blue that it gave the lake its name. Dense forests cover its shores, and Goygol National Park was established in 2008.

Goygol is often celebrated in Azerbaijani poetry and song and is one of the most visited places near Ganja.
