Lake Kaindy

A mountain lake formed after the 1911 earthquake — a "sunken forest" of dead spruce trunks rising from the water.

The powerful Kebin earthquake of 1911 brought down a mountainside that dammed the valley. The rising water drowned a spruce forest, whose trunks still stand upright out of the bluish lake.

The lake lies in Kolsai Lakes National Park at about 2,000 metres; the cold water has preserved the branches for more than a century.

In winter divers explore the trunks beneath the frozen surface, and jeep tours run here from Almaty.
