Hungary's armed forces are called the Magyar Honvédség; honvéd means "defender of the homeland", a name inherited from the army of the 1848–1849 war of independence.
They consist of land and air forces; service is voluntary, with conscription only in wartime, and the air force flies JAS 39 Gripen fighters.
Hungary has been a NATO member since 1999, and since 2016 it has carried out a broad modernisation programme called "Zrínyi 2026".
