Magzhan Zhumabayev was born in northern Kazakhstan and studied at the Galiya madrasa in Ufa among Tatar intellectuals. His first collection, Sholpan, was published in Kazan in 1912.

His poetry stands out for its lyricism, symbolism and love of the homeland, celebrating Turkic unity and the heroic spirit of Kazakh history. He was an active member of the Alash movement.

Branded a "nationalist" in the Soviet era, he was shot in 1938. His works were long banned; today he is regarded as a classic of Kazakh literature.
