Muhammad Fuzuli

Great lyric poet (c. 1494–1556), author of Leyli and Majnun in Azerbaijani.

Muhammad Suleyman oglu Fuzuli was an Azerbaijani Turkic poet who lived in Iraq, around Karbala and Baghdad, and left divans in Azerbaijani, Persian and Arabic.

His Leyli and Majnun, written in Azerbaijani in 1536, is a masterpiece of Turkic literature, and the libretto of Uzeyir Hajibeyli's 1908 opera is based on it.

Fuzuli's ghazals remain the texts most often sung by mugham performers, while his prose letter Shikayetname wittily criticises the injustices of his time.
