Mete Gazoz was born in Istanbul into a sporting family and has shot the Olympic recurve bow since childhood.

At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, he beat Italy's Mauro Nespoli in the individual final to become Olympic champion — Türkiye's first Olympic gold in archery. He had also won the World Cup Final in 2019.

His success greatly boosted interest in archery in Türkiye, and an archery stone in the Okmeydanı tradition was erected to commemorate the victory.
