Mount Nemrut is in Adıyaman province. In the 1st century BC King Antiochus I of Commagene had an artificial burial mound of stone chippings built for himself on the summit.

On the eastern and western terraces sit colossal statues of the king, gods, a lion and an eagle. Earthquakes toppled the heads, which now stand in rows on the ground — the mountain's best-known image.

Visitors come especially for sunrise and sunset. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
