Muslim Magomayev
Baritone, pop and opera singer (1942–2008), one of the best-loved voices of the former Soviet Union.

Muslim Magomayev was born in Baku on 17 August 1942. His grandfather, the composer of the same name, is one of the classics of Azerbaijani opera.
In the 1960s he trained at La Scala in Milan and sang opera roles such as Figaro and in Tosca, while winning enormous fame as a pop singer. In 1973, aged 31, he was named People's Artist of the USSR.
Magomayev loved to sing Azerbaijani songs such as "Azerbaijan" and "Song about Baku". He died in Moscow on 25 October 2008 and is buried in the Alley of Honour in Baku.
