National Anthem of Azerbaijan

The "March of Azerbaijan": music by Uzeyir Hajibeyli, words by Ahmad Javad. Written in 1919, it has been the state anthem since 1992.

The anthem was created in 1919, in the time of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, with music by Uzeyir Hajibeyli and words by the poet Ahmad Javad. It opens with the lines "Azerbaijan! Azerbaijan! O glorious homeland of heroic sons!"

The march was banned in Soviet times, and Ahmad Javad fell victim to the repressions of 1937. After independence was restored, the "March of Azerbaijan" was adopted again as the state anthem in 1992.

It is played at official ceremonies, at Azerbaijani victories in sport and on national holidays.
