Nury Halmammedov
Composer (1938–1983), one of the greatest figures of Turkmen music, counted among Turkmenistan's "Greatest Sons".
Nury Halmammedov was born in the village of Daýna in Turkmenistan and studied music in Ashgabat and Moscow.
He blended the intonations of Turkmen folk music with classical forms, writing symphonic works, cantatas, romances and film music; his songs are still loved in Turkmenistan.
He lived only 45 years, dying in Ashgabat in 1983, and was posthumously named People's Artist of Turkmenistan in 1991; his anniversaries are marked in Turkmenistan and Russia.
