Osman Türkay

Poet and critic (1927–2001), nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988, whose works appeared in more than 30 languages.

Osman Türkay was born in Ozanköy near Kyrenia, studied there and then read philosophy and journalism in London, working for several magazines and newspapers.

In his later work he wrote increasingly in English, and his "space age" poetry, joining the themes of humanity, the universe and science, won international recognition.

He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988, his works were published in more than 30 languages, and he is the best-known Turkish Cypriot poet abroad.
