Patriotic War (2020)

The 44-day war of 27 September – 10 November 2020, in which Azerbaijan liberated most of its occupied lands.

After the First Karabakh War, from the early 1990s Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts — about a fifth of Azerbaijan's territory — remained under Armenian occupation, and hundreds of thousands of people were displaced.

The counter-offensive that began on 27 September 2020 lasted 44 days. Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Zangilan, Gubadli and hundreds of villages were liberated, and the liberation of Shusha on 8 November decided the war. Under the trilateral statement of 10 November, Aghdam, Kalbajar and Lachin were also returned to Azerbaijan.

The local anti-terrorist measures of September 2023 restored sovereignty over Azerbaijan's entire territory. The fallen are honoured on 27 September, Remembrance Day, and the victory on 8 November, Victory Day. Large-scale reconstruction is under way in the liberated lands.
