Pécs, Hungary's fifth-largest city, lies on the slopes of the Mecsek near the Croatian border and has the country's oldest university.

Under Ottoman rule for 150 years, it has more Turkish buildings than any other city in Central Europe. The Gazi Kasım Pasha Mosque on the main square was built in 1543–1546; though converted into a church in 1702, its dome and mihrab still recall Ottoman architecture.

The Yakovalı Hasan Pasha Mosque survives with its minaret, along with remains of tombs and baths, and the city's early Christian necropolis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
