Qarabağ was founded in Aghdam in 1951. When the town was occupied in 1993 the club lost its home ground and had to move to Baku, earning it the nickname "the homeless club".

Despite the hardships it became Azerbaijan's strongest team and has won the national title many times. In 2017–18 it became the first Azerbaijani club to reach the Champions League group stage.

Qarabağ is a symbol of Aghdam and of all Karabakh, and its successes gave hope to refugees and displaced people during the years of occupation.
