Gabala lies on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. The ruins of ancient Gabala, capital of Caucasian Albania some two thousand years ago, are now an archaeological reserve.

Today Gabala is one of Azerbaijan's favourite getaways: the Tufandag ski resort and cable cars, Lake Nohur, waterfalls and forests. The Gabala International Music Festival is held here every summer.

On 7 October 2025 Gabala hosted the 12th summit of the Organization of Turkic States.
