Independence of Kyrgyzstan (1991)
On 31 August 1991 the Supreme Council of Kyrgyzstan adopted the declaration of independence.
In December 1990 Kyrgyzstan declared state sovereignty and renamed itself the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. After the failed coup in Moscow in August 1991, the Supreme Council adopted the declaration of independence on 31 August.
The young state adopted its flag and anthem in 1992 and its first constitution on 5 May 1993, the year the national currency, the som, was introduced.
31 August is Kyrgyzstan's main state holiday, celebrated with a parade, concerts and festivities on Bishkek's Ala-Too Square.
