Sakarya gas field

The largest natural gas field in Türkiye's history, discovered in the Black Sea in 2020; first gas came ashore in 2023.

Türkiye imports most of its energy. In August 2020 the national drillship Fatih found a large gas field at the Tuna-1 well in the Black Sea, about 170 km off the Zonguldak coast; it was named Sakarya.

Further drilling raised the reserve estimate several times, to hundreds of billions of cubic metres. Gas from subsea wells is piped to a processing plant at Filyos, and first gas entered the grid on 20 April 2023.

The project is being expanded in several phases, aiming to meet a significant share of household gas demand from domestic production and reduce dependence on imports.
