Salamis was an ancient city-state on the east coast at the mouth of the Pedieos river; legend says it was founded by the Greek hero Teucer after the Trojan War.

For centuries one of the island's most important centres, it now shows a Roman gymnasium with marble columns, baths, a large theatre and mosaics.

Its seaside ruins are a must for travellers to Famagusta, and ancient royal tombs lie nearby.
