Samad Vurgun

Poet and playwright (1906–1956), Azerbaijan's first People's Poet, author of the poem Azerbaijan and the drama Vagif.

Samad Vurgun (born Samad Yusif oglu Vakilov) was born in 1906 in the village of Yukhari Salahli in the Gazakh district.

His poem Azerbaijan became a symbol of love for the homeland. His dramas Vagif, Farhad and Shirin and Man and his narrative poem Aygun are also famous.

A full member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, he became the country's first People's Poet. He died in Baku in 1956.
