Saryarka, the "yellow ridge", is the name of the steppes of central and northern Kazakhstan. The two reserves on the UNESCO list — Korgalzhyn near Astana and Naurzum in Kostanay Region — protect pristine steppe and fresh- and salt-water lakes.

The lakes are a stopover for millions of migratory birds flying between Africa, India and South Asia and Siberia. Korgalzhyn has the world's northernmost flamingo colony, and the steppe is home to the Siberian crane, little bustard and saiga.

"Saryarka — Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan" became Central Asia's first natural World Heritage Site in 2008.
