Seyahatname (Book of Travels)

Evliya Çelebi's ten-volume travel book — the richest source on the 17th-century Ottoman world and its neighbours.

The Seyahatname covers Evliya Çelebi's journeys from the 1630s to the end of his life. The first volume is devoted to Istanbul; the others to Anatolia, the Caucasus, Crimea, the Balkans, Europe, Egypt and Sudan.

He describes fortresses, mosques and markets, people's languages, dress, food, trades and legends in a lively, sometimes exaggerated and humorous style, and includes word lists from many languages.

The book is an irreplaceable source for historians, linguists and ethnographers. Its manuscripts are kept in the Topkapı Palace library, and in 2013 it was added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
