Shymbulak lies about 25 km south of central Almaty, above the Medeu skating rink. Gondolas run from Medeu up to over 3,000 metres at the Talgar Pass.

Its slopes have been upgraded to European standards; the season lasts from November to April and is known for its many sunny days. Alpine events of the 2011 Asian Winter Games were held here.

In summer Shymbulak is used for hiking, mountain biking and sightseeing.
