Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon

Colourful sandstone shapes carved by wind and rain on the south shore of Issyk-Kul.

The canyon lies a few hundred metres inland from the road along Issyk-Kul's southern shore. Its red, orange and yellow sandstone has been sculpted by wind and rain over the ages.

The rocks resemble castle walls, a dragon, a camel and fairy-tale figures — hence the name. Climbing them gives views over the canyon to the blue lake.

It is especially beautiful at sunset, when the colours glow, and is a favourite stop for travellers around Issyk-Kul.
