Tolomush Okeev

Film director and screenwriter (1935–2001), a maker of the "Kyrgyz film miracle" and People's Artist of the USSR.

Tolomush Okeev was born in the Issyk-Kul area and studied cinema in Leningrad and Moscow.

In the 1960s–70s, with colleagues such as Bolot Shamshiev and Melis Ubukeev, he brought Kyrgyz cinema to world attention — critics spoke of a "Kyrgyz miracle". Mountain nature, nomadic life and moral choice are the main themes of his films.

He was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1985 and in the years of independence worked to preserve Kyrgyzstan's film industry.
